Simple Ways on How to Prevent Plumbing Clogs

15 January 2021

Plumbing systems play a crucial role in properties. They are designed to easily collect, transport, and distribute water across areas and rooms that need it. They also have parts and components that can effectively get rid of liquid and human waste. A fully functional plumbing system can do all these tasks without expecting any downtimes and inconvenience.

But one problem that property owners typically encounter with their plumbing systems is the occurrence of congestion. Congestion of these systems often results in clogged drains and unbearable backups. And as these parts are clogged, their ability to remove liquid and human waste is decreased significantly.

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to prevent plumbing clogs and occurrence of plumbing system congestion. Some of these things are the following.

Conduct Monthly Cleaning

One thing that you could do to prevent plumbing clogs is to clean your plumbing components for at least once a month. There are tons of waste materials that can accumulate on the drainage of your plumbing. Some materials, such as hair and grease, can even solidify into one solid chunk, which can entirely prevent liquid and waste from being removed. You can use a drain cleaner to remove grit and grime. You can also pour some baking soda into the drain and follow it with hot water to effectively clean it.

Flush the Drains Properly

Speaking of drains, you must flush them properly and regularly if you want to avoid plumbing clogs. Hot water is an element that can easily break up oil in food products. So, adding it can help prevent any possibilities of clogs and congestion. Flushing the drains with a huge volume of hot water can also be effective in reaching other plumbing components that do not usually receive a huge volume of water. Aside from hot water, you can add and pour some vinegar to clean the pathway of the drains.

Block Elements and Debris

If you want to minimise the amount of hair and other things that enter your plumbing system, then you may want to purchase and install some helpful tools. For your tubs and showers, you can maximise a simple mesh drain screen so that hair strands will not be able to enter your plumbing components. Installing a lint catcher on your washing machine can also prevent lint from entering and blocking your drains. What makes these fixes cost-effective is that they are significantly cheaper than repairs.

Avoid Throwing Things

The congestion of the plumbing is typically caused by the constant dumping of things down the drain and toilet. For grease, it must be collected and eradicated somewhere else. Likewise, food products that are too greasy must not be dumped on the drain. Products such as dental floss, cotton balls, and hair must also be tossed to the trashcan, instead of just flushing them down the toilet. Clogging on your drains and even pipes can cause problems, so avoid dumping these things irresponsibly.
